63% of all disaster plans do not work when a business interruption occurs according to Janco

Recovery Planning TemplateJanco Associates has just completed a review of 195 organizations that had business interruptions in the past 12 months and found that only 72 (37%) of them had disaster plans in place that worked without a hitch.  Of the remaining 123 (67%) there were a number of problems; error in plan (62%); plan not up to date (47%); unable to find necessary passwords (34%); insufficient backup power (22%); communications not working (22%); insufficient training (17%); priorities not established (14%); plan not documented (13%); and disaster not declared in a timely manner (12%).

The CEO of Janco, Mr. Victor Janulaitis said, “This survey shows that a lot of work still needs to be done by organizations to ensure that disaster recovery and business continuity plans will meet the needs of enterprises as we move into these more turbulent times.” He added, “… most organizations have gone through the effort and expense to create plans, now it is important that they expend the resources to train staff, test the plans, and keep them up to date.”
